Why Chose Piracy?
-
Many property owners were guaranteed protection by the state from European power before colonization. The failure to uphold that protection made many seafarers disgruntled and unwilling to submit to authority.
-
“Piracy is our birthright” in reference to Malays, whose definition he didn’t limit to native borns (Sultan Muhammed Shah Syiah)
-
a Singapore official, stated, “... All the orang rayat [orang laut] may be looked upon as pirates, ready to obey any leader...,”(Edward Presgrave) which suggests they followed those who served their economic interests.
-
Piracy provided a way of making a living while rebelling against or working for the government

Technology

Piracy has probably been going on since just after boats touched water. And arguably these groups are still running today but obviously their codes and technology have evolved.
